GOSPEL RAP.IS IT APPROPRIATE?
Gospel raps are one of the questionable music genres
in the gospel music industry. Christians are confused on whether they should
listen to these kinds of music or not. Some think it is a form of modernization
but even if it is a form of modernization at times you have to consider whether
the change is changing your life positively an spiritually. Here is a short
expression on of my opinion on legitimacy of gospel raps.
What I know so well is that gospel raps are
inappropriate for a strong Christian life, but why?
Whenever a Christian rapper gets on the stage to perform
or present. What do most people see? Of course it’s the moves, the skills and
the styles. The audience end up praising the singer’s skills and not even
appreciate the message at the end which should not be the case. Gospel music is
meant to preach and teach the gospel of Christ and not for benefit to our
flesh.
The heavy beats of these raps are physical distracters,
no focus on words. We are expected to capture the concept but the beats won’t
allow us. Can you call that gospel really?
There is expression of art form which is a picture
of weakness and surrender on the part of people who think they are serving God
and they are not. They are serving their own flesh. They are disobedient
cowards. They do not want to engage into the appropriate fight that’s supposed
to be engaged.
How will it look like when a sixty year old picks a
microphone and starts rapping gospel. Weird and somehow strange right? Remember
the word of God is meant to be spread by anyone despite their age and this is
not the case in this gospel rapping industry. Now you get me.
Rap has a track record of being profane, violent and
sexual and because of these associations some guys have a problem in separating
the lyrics they expect to hear from secular rap and lyrics that are actually
spoken in Christian rap. Whenever you listen to Christian raps at times these
vices of violence and sexual content come to your mind especially for those who
were driven to Christianity through these Christian raps and were initially exposed
to hip hop raps. It reminds us of vulgar things that distract us from keeping
our thoughts pure and focused on God’s goodness. At some instances some of
these artists are dressed in a manner that makes you think you are in hip-hop
world. Some even cover their body with tattoos. Do these portray a real Christian
picture?
Message can be there but nobody gets it. Most gospel
raps you don’t even get the lyrics when listening unless you have the lyrics to
read. You end up dancing, cheering excitedly at the music but at the end no
message. Maybe a small number out of the crowd might get the message and that
is the keen people. Remember God’s
message should be communicated to all human kind.
Some will do these gospel raps to get famous and get
money faster which is not important in the kingdom of God. Your role is not to
get famous but to spread God’s message to humans.
Now you know! Just stick to the right type of gospel
music for better strengthening of your faith in Christ.
